You’ve been having a difficult and tiring day at work. After what seems like forever, it’s finally time to go home. You smile as you think of going home to your spouse and kids and spending a nice and relaxing evening with them. Yet when you remember that other unwanted guests are also waiting for you, your smile turns into a frown. Indeed, nothing is more disheartening than having to face a pest infestation at home. House bugs are an incredibly annoying problem faced by plenty of home owners.
They are not called pests for no reason. House bugs are classified into 6 different groups:
- -the bloodsuckers
- -those that contaminate your food and water
- -those that damage wood and furniture
- -those that damage your clothing
- -those that damage paper and books
House bugs are fairly easy to eliminate, provided you are equipped with the right weapons to fight against infestation. Here are helpful tips that you can use to eliminate two of the most domestic pests:
Cockroaches
Getting rid of roaches can be a bit of challenge. They survive longer than most house bugs and they multiply much faster as the the female cockroach can lay as much as 24 eggs every month. Cockroaches like to live in damp, dark places with an abudant food and water supply nearby. Perhaps one of the most effective remedies for eliminating cockroaches is the DE or Diatomaceous Earth, which are fossilized shells of tiny organisms that have the ability to dehydrate a cockroach’s frame, killing it within hours after contact.
Homemade cockroach baits are also effective in eliminating these house bugs. Simply mix baking powder with sugar and sprinkle it on infested areas. This simple formula will mess up their digestive system and eventually kill them. Bay laurel leaves, boric acid, and Cedarcide granules are also powerful cockroach repellants.
Houseflies
Like cockroaches, flies wallow in filth. They breed on dirt and trash as well as human and animal waste. They carry life-threatening diseases such as dengue fever and malaria, so it is important that you keep them out of your home and nearby surroundings.
As always, cleanliness is the key to preventing pest infestation. Wipe tables clean with salt water immediately after every meal.
You can also make your own flytrap – place rotten meat inside a jar and punch a small hole on the lid. Houseflies are not smart insects. The smell of rotten meat lures them in, but they won’t be able to find a way out since the hole is just small.
Fly strips – strips of thick paper coated sugar and wax to attract and trap flies – are also simple and effective tools to eliminate these house bugs.
